If you are looking for ways to prevent stress wrinkles and keep your skin youthful then you are in the right place! I am sharing 6 ways to tackle stress wrinkles head on because over the years I have come to terms with the fact that wrinkles are inevitable. True, I can slather my face with a line up of anti aging lotions and potions holding onto the hope they will help. But truth be told it is not a matter of if my skin will form wrinkles it is a matter of when.
What happens though when stress wrinkles appear before their time? Let me tell you, it is more common than you think and I see it every single day in my salon.
What Are Stress Wrinkles?
I know you probably know this but I am just going to share anyway because it is worth understanding! When we are stressed we may not get adequate sleep, we likely do not exercise as often as we should and our diet may suffer. All of those factors contribute to negative effects not just on our health but on our skin.
Stress wrinkles are thought to occur as a result of chronic stress typically psychological stress. Not forgetting environmental stressors such as toxins, pollutants and sun exposure.
The facial region is typically where stress wrinkles are most common especially on the forehead and in between the eyebrows.
The Real Reasons Stress Wrinkles Appear Earlier Than They Should
OK so this is the bit I find really fascinating and I think you will too! Let me tell you about something called telomeres. I know you are thinking what on earth are they! Well they are the caps at the end of each strand of DNA that protect our chromosomes. Think of them a bit like the plastic covering at the end of a shoelace. Each time a cell divides the telomeres become slightly shorter. Eventually they become so short that the cell can no longer divide successfully and the cell dies leading to ageing.
Now here is the really interesting part. Stress accelerates this process. When we become stressed our telomeres shorten faster and when they can no longer replicate the visible signs of ageing including stress wrinkles begin to appear.
Fascinating isn’t it!
Stress Wrinkles vs Age Related Wrinkles
I know what you are thinking… are they not just the same thing? Well not quite!
Wrinkles caused by aging occur due to the natural decrease in collagen and elastin. From our twenties we begin to produce less collagen and although we cannot stop ageing completely we can help slow it down by making smart lifestyle adjustments. Stress however can lead to premature signs of ageing such as stress wrinkles, pigmentation and under eye circles.
If you are in your thirties or older and under chronic stress you may see both age related and stress related wrinkles appearing together which can feel incredibly frustrating. But let me tell you there is plenty you can do about it! Here are 6 Ways to Prevent Stress Wrinkles:
1. Create a Stress Relief Routine That Protects Your Skin
Avoiding stress is easier said than done, I hear you! But implementing a stress relief routine into your daily life makes a real difference to both your mind and your skin. This could mean exercising, meditating, journaling or simply taking time out for yourself every single day. Our Worry Free and Stress Less Pulse Point Oils are perfect for moments of overwhelm. Roll onto your wrists, inhale deeply and feel the tension begin to ease. Because let me tell you a calmer mind genuinely means calmer skin. It really does.
2. Stay Hydrated Inside and Out to Reduce Stress Wrinkles
I know this sounds simple and you have probably heard it a thousand times but please do not underestimate this one! When you are under chronic stress it is so easy to forget to stay hydrated and this really does compound the problem. Hydration works on two levels; drinking enough water to support your skin from within and moisturising externally to maintain barrier strength and prevent stress wrinkles becoming more pronounced.
Our Plump Me Up Gel Moisturiser delivers lightweight but powerful hydration improving skin structure, plumping fine lines and reducing the look of stress related skin damage throughout the day.
3. Modify Your Lifestyle to Support Skin Repair
Now I am not here to tell you how to live your life! But let me just say that small consistent lifestyle changes make such a significant difference to how quickly stress wrinkles develop. A well-rounded diet, limiting alcohol intake, avoiding smoking and incorporating breathing techniques regularly all support your skin’s ability to repair and stay resilient. Your skin reflects every positive choice you make and I see this every single day with my clients.
4. Prioritise Sleep for Overnight Stress Wrinkle Repair
I know, I know… easier said than done! But hear me out. Aiming for seven to eight hours of sleep each night gives your body the time it needs to repair stress wrinkle damage from within. During sleep your skin’s blood flow increases, collagen is rebuilt and damage from environmental stressors is actively repaired. Sleep and stress wrinkle prevention go hand in hand so never ever underestimate the power of a good night’s rest. Your skin is working so hard for you while you sleep!
5. Wear SPF Every Single Day to Prevent Stress Wrinkles
Right, this one is non-negotiable and I will not apologise for saying it! Use a sunscreen daily with an SPF of at least 30 especially on the face and neck and yes that absolutely includes the winter months too. I cannot tell you how many clients tell me they only wear SPF in summer and honestly it makes me wince! Our Whipped Cream Moisturiser is a beautiful multi-tasking product that combines deep nourishing hydration with mineral UV protection. It blends flawlessly underneath makeup and actively defends against the environmental stressors that accelerate stress wrinkles and premature ageing every single day.
6. Stimulate Collagen to Soften Existing Stress Wrinkles
Now this is where it gets really exciting! Collagen stimulating treatments are one of the most effective ways to prevent as well as soften existing stress wrinkles. Let me tell you, the results I see at LA Beauty and Spa from treatments like microdermabrasion, enzyme peels, radio frequency and HIFU facials are honestly incredible.
These professionally delivered treatments actively support collagen production and skin renewal in a way that no product alone can replicate.
At home our Chocolate Delight Enzyme Mask gently dissolves dead skin cells that make stress wrinkles look more pronounced revealing smoother brighter skin underneath. LA’s Radiance Drops contain a stable form of vitamin C to brighten the complexion, reduce free radical damage and actively support your skin’s natural collagen activity every single day.
The Bottom Line on Stress Wrinkles
Stress wrinkles may feel inevitable but let me tell you they do not have to take hold before their time. A combination of smart lifestyle choices, the right skincare products and professional treatments gives your skin every possible advantage.
You cannot always control your stress but you can absolutely control how you support your skin through it. And that is exactly what I am here to help you do!
All said with love,
I know many people have different opinions and that is absolutely fine. Any questions just ask…
