I know, you have heard it all before, but should we be using collagen as supplements or skincare products? I will share it again… Collagen is the protein responsible for our skin’s plumpness and elasticity.
Once we hit 20 it takes a nosedive, slowly though, don’t worry. But why not make a few changes now! We all know the beauty industry will be all over any new anti-ageing hype. This is no different. But let’s find out some facts…
You will have seen a tonne of collagen-boosting products and supplements, each promising to turn back the clock. But when it comes to collagen stimulation, which reigns supreme: topical products or ingestible supplements?
Let’s Take a Look at Topical Products First
Topical products like creams, serums and masks deliver collagen-stimulating ingredients directly to the skin. This targeted approach ensures a higher concentration of active ingredients reaches the fibroblasts, the cells responsible for collagen production, compared to oral supplements that have to navigate the digestive system.
Many topical products go beyond simply stimulating collagen. They often contain a combination of ingredients like retinol, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid which work together to address various aspects of skin ageing including pigmentation, hydration and cell turnover. Our Radiance Drops contain a stable form of vitamin C to brighten and support natural collagen activity while our Plump Me Up Gel Moisturiser contains Matrixyl 3000 and sodium hyaluronate to visibly firm and hydrate.
While the long-term effects of both products and supplements take time to show, topical products can offer immediate, albeit temporary, plumping and smoothing effects. Always a confidence boost, especially for special occasions!
Now Let’s Look at Supplements
Supplements work systemically, potentially influencing collagen production throughout the body including joints, bones and even gut health. This holistic approach could offer benefits beyond just skin health.
Taking a tablet can sometimes be easier than remembering to apply creams and serums daily. Supplements can be particularly appealing for those with busy lifestyles or sensitive skin who might find topical products irritating.
Supplements also allow for more precise control over collagen intake compared to topical products where absorption rates can vary.
So Who Wins?
The truth is there is no clear-cut winner and it all depends on your personal preference. However in my opinion if you are wanting to go down this road a combination of both topical products and supplements is the way forward.
Please pay attention to the amount of collagen in any supplement you choose. You need a minimum of 2.5g and anything up to 15g. This can result in products being more expensive but if you are going to do it you may as well do it right, ey?
I am not advising you to go down either route. Having the facts is always the best way forward.
Personally I believe diet can fix everything. However I know we are always looking for alternatives, quick fixes and also just something to treat ourselves to. And you really can’t beat a few great products. Silky soft skin is always a winner!
A Few Reminders
Regardless of your chosen method consistency is key. Be patient and give your chosen products or supplements enough time to work their magic.
Please don’t forget the importance of a healthy lifestyle including a balanced diet, regular exercise and adequate sleep to support optimal collagen production from within.
By understanding the strengths and weaknesses of both topical products and supplements you can create a personalised strategy that keeps your collagen levels pumping and your skin glowing for years to come.
Remember the power to beautiful skin lies not just in the products you choose but in your commitment to a healthy and holistic approach to beauty.
All said with love,
I know many people have different opinions and that is absolutely fine. Any questions just ask…
