Collagen Supplements: Do They Actually Work?
  • Written by: Louisa Ashforth

A question people often ask me… Collagen Supplements: Do They Actually Work?  So I am here to bust some myths about collagen and what actually works for younger looking skin.

Collagen is everywhere right now, in so many variations!  Powders, pills, creams, serums… Everyone seems to be taking it in some form.  The beauty world cannot get enough of it and the promises are bold. Firmer skin, fewer wrinkles, a more youthful complexion. But do collagen supplements actually work or is it just clever marketing?

As a skincare professional with 25 years of experience working with real clients and real skin concerns, this topic genuinely fascinates and frustrates me in equal measure. There is so much noise out there and so little clarity. So let’s cut through it and look at the facts.

What Is Collagen and Why Does It Matter?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies making up around 25% of our total protein content. It is found in the skin, bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments providing structure and support. Think of it as the scaffolding that holds everything together keeping your skin firm, plump and youthful.

The problem is that collagen production naturally begins to decline from our mid-twenties onwards. By our forties the effects are often very noticeable with wrinkles, sagging skin and a loss of that youthful bounce becoming more apparent. It is no wonder so many of us go searching for ways to restore it.

Do Collagen Supplements Actually Work?

The main claim of collagen supplements is that they stimulate collagen production in the skin improving elasticity, hydration and reducing wrinkles. Most supplements use hydrolysed collagen peptides which are broken down forms of collagen believed to be easier for the body to absorb.

The theory is that by ingesting these peptides your body signals the cells responsible for collagen production to make more. Sounds logical. But is the science actually there to back it up?

Some small studies have shown promising results including improved skin elasticity, increased hydration and reduced wrinkle depth. However the overall evidence remains inconclusive. Some people report glowing skin, stronger nails and improved hair while others notice little to no difference at all. The truth is results vary enormously from person to person.

5 Collagen Supplement Myths Busted

Myth 1.

All Collagen Supplements Are the Same They are not. Many over-the-counter supplements contain very low doses of collagen which may not be enough to make a noticeable difference. Research suggests you need a minimum of 2.5g per serving to see any real benefit with some studies pointing to up to 15g per day for optimal results. Always check the dosage before you buy.

Myth 2.

Collagen Supplements Are the Only Way to Boost Collagen Not at all. A balanced diet rich in collagen-building nutrients such as vitamin C, proline and glycine can be just as powerful. Citrus fruits, red peppers, leafy greens, eggs, fish and lean meat all provide the building blocks your body needs to produce collagen naturally. Feed your skin from within and you may be surprised by the results.

Myth 3.

Topical Collagen Creams Rebuild Collagen in the Skin Collagen molecules are too large to penetrate the skin’s surface so applying collagen directly does very little. What does make a real difference are ingredients that support your skin’s own collagen production. Our Plump Me Up Gel Moisturiser contains Matrixyl 3000 which is a clinically recognised peptide that actively supports collagen production from within the skin. For brightening and collagen support our Radiance Drops contain a stable form of vitamin C which encourages natural collagen activity without irritation.

Myth 4.

Collagen Supplements Work the Same for Everyone Collagen production is influenced by genetics, lifestyle, stress levels and environmental factors. What works brilliantly for one person may have little effect on another. There is no one size fits all answer which is exactly why I always encourage a holistic approach to skin health rather than relying on a single product or supplement.

Myth 5.

Supplements Are Enough on Their Own Even if collagen supplements do offer some benefit they should never be used in isolation. Quality sleep is when your skin does most of its repairing and collagen rebuilding. Chronic stress releases hormones that actively break down collagen. Staying hydrated helps transport nutrients to your skin cells. A truly effective approach to collagen support combines good nutrition, smart skincare and healthy daily habits.

Natural Ways to Support Collagen Production

You do not need to rely on supplements to support healthy, youthful skin. Bone broth is a brilliant natural source of collagen-supporting proteins and easy to incorporate into your diet. Fatty fish such as salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids which help keep skin firm and plump. Raw fruits and vegetables preserve the collagen-building nutrients your skin needs. And never underestimate the power of a good night’s sleep and proper stress management.  Now, both have a direct and significant impact on how your skin ages.

The Bottom Line

Collagen supplements may offer some benefit for some people but they are not a miracle cure for ageing skin. The science is still evolving and the results are far from guaranteed. Rather than spending a fortune on supplements focus on a nutrient-rich diet, targeted skincare with proven ingredients and a lifestyle that supports your skin from every angle.

At LA Skincare everything we create is designed to work with your skin not against it. Simple, professional and results-driven — because that is what your skin truly deserves.

All said with love,

I know many people have different opinions and that is absolutely fine. Any questions just ask…
