7 Powerful Ways to Beat Hormonal Acne for Clear Skin
  • Written by: Louisa Ashforth

I am here to share 7 powerful ways to beat hormonal acne for clear skin because let me tell you this is something I feel really passionately about. I have suffered with adult acne myself and I know how awful and confidence knocking it can be. You are absolutely not alone and there is so much you can do about it.

Hormonal acne is also known as adult acne and it is caused by genetic and hormonal factors that cause breakouts well past puberty and the teenage years. It occurs more often in women and is typically located on the lower part of the face around the chin and jawline.

And here is the thing hormonal acne has been on the rise in women in their 30s 40s and even 50s. Hard to believe isn’t it but it is completely true.

What Is Hormonal Acne?

I know you probably thought hormonal acne was just about the rush of new hormones entering a teenager’s body. But hormonal acne affects all ages from teens right through to 50 plus and beyond.

Teenage hormonal acne will usually appear across the forehead, chin and nose area whereas adult hormonal acne tends to develop in the lower face around the jawline and chin.

It shows up in the form of blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and cysts and can be triggered by polycystic ovarian syndrome, pregnancy, endometriosis, menstruation, menopause, decreased oestrogen and increased androgen levels.

What Does Your Acne Location Actually Mean?

This is something clients ask me all the time and I find it really fascinating! Have you ever wondered what it means when breakouts show up on different parts of your face? Let me help you identify what your skin might be telling you.

  • Forehead acne usually presents as blackheads and whiteheads and typically implies overactive oil glands.
  • Cheek acne does not tell us a great deal unfortunately and could be hereditary.
  • Chin and jawline acne is where we look at hormonal imbalances and fluctuations in both males and females.

So if you are breaking out consistently around your chin and jawline hormones are almost certainly playing a role.

1. The Reasons Sugar Is Making Your Hormonal Acne Worse

Now this one might surprise you! Diet plays a much bigger role in hormonal acne than most people realise and sugar is one of the biggest culprits. Let me explain why.

The more sugar you consume the more your glucose levels spike which forces your pancreas to release more insulin. Eventually your cells become resistant to insulin and your pancreas struggles to keep up with the demand. This results in excess sugar in your bloodstream which causes your body to produce more androgen hormones such as testosterone. This can influence the development of follicles on the ovaries and affect ovulation leading to irregular periods, acne and other hormonal symptoms.

Simple carbohydrates and processed foods such as white bread, white rice, fried food, ice cream and refined sugar are very quickly converted to glucose causing these rapid insulin spikes. These spikes cause your skin to produce more oil and can actually make your skin look more aged too.

Our bodies are incredibly complicated and I am simply putting some thoughts out there for you to consider. But reducing your sugar intake really can make a visible difference to hormonal acne.

2. How Stress and Cortisol Trigger Hormonal Acne Breakouts

Let me tell you about cortisol because this is such an important one. Cortisol is our primary stress hormone and it increases glucose in our bloodstream. When cortisol becomes imbalanced due to high periods of stress it can result in all manner of health issues and one of them is hormonal acne.

During stressful periods when your cortisol levels peak your sebaceous glands produce more sebum. This makes skin oily, clogs pores and causes inflammation. All of this can lead not only to hormonal acne but to other skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis too. During stress related hormonal breakout periods your skin’s barrier function becomes impaired which is why it is so important to support and protect it.

Our Whipped Cream Moisturiser is brilliant for this. It actively helps to repair your skin’s natural barrier function keeping it protected and supported even during the most stressful hormonal breakout periods. And because all LA Skincare products are made with natural ingredients they will not cause further hormone disruption through synthetic or chemical additives.

3. How to Cleanse Hormonal Acne Skin Without Making It Worse

I know when you are breaking out the temptation is to scrub your skin and strip it of every trace of oil. But let me tell you this is one of the worst things you can do for hormonal acne!

Stripping the skin disrupts the barrier function further and triggers even more oil production making breakouts worse not better.

Our Squeaky Clean Cleanser is perfect for hormonal acne prone skin. With lactic acid and salicylic acid it gently purifies and rebalances without stripping working within the pores to reduce congestion and support clearer skin without ever compromising your barrier function.

Gentle consistent cleansing is one of the most powerful things you can do for hormonal acne.  Do not forget to DOUBLE cleanse!!

4. How Exfoliation Helps Clear Hormonal Acne Skin

Regular gentle exfoliation is brilliant for hormonal acne because it removes the dead skin cells that clog pores and contribute to breakouts. But it needs to be the right kind of exfoliation. Harsh scrubs can aggravate inflamed hormonal acne skin so choosing something more targeted and gentle is key.

Our Chocolate Delight Enzyme Mask is a brilliant option for hormonal acne skin. It uses natural exfoliating acids to gently dissolve dead skin cells without harsh abrasion while kaolin and bentonite draw out impurities and excess oil from congested pores.

Used once or twice weekly it makes a genuinely visible difference to the clarity and texture of hormonal acne prone skin.

5. How to Keep Hormonal Acne Skin Hydrated Without Clogging Pores

I hear this all the time from clients with hormonal acne:

‘I do not want to moisturise because my skin is already oily!’

But let me tell you skipping moisturiser is actually making your hormonal acne worse. When skin is dehydrated it overproduces oil to compensate and that means more congestion and more breakouts.

What you need is a lightweight oil free moisturiser that hydrates without clogging pores. Our Plump Me Up Gel Moisturiser is absolutely perfect for hormonal acne prone skin.

Oil free and non-clogging it delivers powerful hydration with Matrixyl 3000 and sodium hyaluronate leaving skin plump, hydrated and balanced without a trace of heaviness or greasiness.

6. How Managing Stress Clears Hormonal Acne From the Inside Out

We have already talked about cortisol and the role stress plays in hormonal acne so this one is really important. Keeping your stress levels under control is genuinely one of the most powerful things you can do for your skin and your overall health.

Removing stressors where possible, exercising regularly, getting quality sleep and taking time for yourself every single day all make a real difference to hormonal acne.

Our Worry Free and Stress Less Pulse Point Oils are brilliant for moments of overwhelm. Roll onto your wrists and inhale deeply for an instant sense of calm. And why not treat yourself to one of our wellbeing and self care days at LA Beauty and Spa?

Designed to refresh your body and mind, melt stress away and promote mental clarity they are genuinely transformative for both your wellbeing and your hormonal acne.

7. How a Natural Approach Rebalances Hormones and Clears Skin

The biggest piece of advice I can give you for hormonal acne is this. Listen to your skin! If something does not feel right it probably is not. A natural holistic approach to both your diet and your skincare really does change everything.

Changing your diet to include more good clean food, reducing your alcohol and caffeine intake, lowering your sugar consumption, exercising regularly, prioritising quality sleep and choosing natural skincare products that do not disrupt your hormones further — all of these things work together to rebalance your body from the inside out.

At LA Skincare everything we create is made with natural ingredients specifically because we understand the connection between what goes on your skin and what happens inside your body. No synthetic additives, no hormone disrupting chemicals. Just clean effective skincare that works with your skin not against it.

Hormonal acne is incredibly common and incredibly treatable. Be patient, be consistent and be kind to yourself throughout the process. You have got this!

This is all said with love,

I know many people have different opinions and that is absolutely fine. The biggest piece of advice I always say is listen to your skin! If it does not feel right it probably is not. Any questions just ask…
